Unboxing the 18" by 18" Danville Planters by New Age Garden®
The first question one always seems to ask is this: Will assembly be hard? Time- consuming?
Will I be launching this product across the room in frustration when things go terribly wrong?
All this before you even get the instructional manual out of the box.
And to answer all my own questions and yours; it was a solid "no" on all accounts.
Assembly was simple with the Danville Planters taking less than 5 minutes for each planter box.
I found it quite amusing that there were zero words in the basic instruction manual. Just eight pictures to follow and poof, you're done.
What about tools? None are needed. Can I get an amen?
Tom who? I can assemble these myself. So I'll put these together and sent him to ALDI to get the groceries. And those salted chocolate caramels. That's what I'm talking about!
And yes, you're talking to the woman who pushes any and all assembly projects on Tom. So when I put something together myself, you better believe it was easy!
What is ECOFLEX®?
Because I'm just so excited to tell you about ECOFLEX®, the material these planters are made from.
ECOFLEX® is incredible. Never heard of it? Well, it's a blend of recycled polymers and wood byproducts.
ECOFLEX® is made by reducing clean, recycled polymers and reclaimed wood by-products from the manufacturing of hardwood (mostly poplar) furniture frames~ materials that normally would be burned or dumped into a landfill transforming them into a flour-like consistency.
So as the name implies, ECOFLEX® is eco-friendly.
The ECOFLEX® material is then mixed with UV inhibitors and color blending compounds and granulated into a form that is used to mold the parts that are used to make an ECOFLEX® based product.
In both looks and feel, ECOFLEX® is comparable to composite but at a fraction of the cost.
Benefits of ECOFLEX®?
- ECOFLEX® is weather-resistant. Longer life cycle!
- ECOFLEX® based structures will easily outlast two wooden structures.
- In milder climates ECOFLEX® products will outlast three or even four traditional wooden structures.
- Moisture and humidity resistant
- ECOFLEX® doesn’t warp, splinter, twist or crack from changes in temperature and humidity making assembly easier and further extending life.
- Natural color
- ECOFLEX® accepts latex paint without priming to customize your look
- Can also be stained with repeat applications of oil based stain to achieve your custom look
- Double wall construction~
- ECOFLEX® panels are constructed with inner and outer walls connected by an interior web making them stronger than a similar thickness of wood.
- Easy to clean. Use a mild dish soap or a Magic Eraser.
- Simple to assemble. So easy that if you wanted to put these boxes away for winter, disassembling is doable.
What should you plant in the Danville Planters?
With a depth of over 12" the root systems of various plants will thrive.
Here are a few ideas to inspire you!
- Dwarf evergreen trees/bushes
- Lemon Cypress topiary
- Holly bushes
- Rosemary plant or topiary
- Small Norfolk pine
- Bulb assortment with tulips, daffodils, hyacinths
- Mini blueberry bushes such as the Top Hat variety (raspberry, too!)
- Million bells and petunias in yellow, pink and purple (I get goosebumps just thinking about them trailing over the edge of the pot!)
- Ornamental grasses
- Herb garden
- Two rose bushes
- Real pumpkins or gourds, no need for a rooted plant
Talk to me about drainage
Drainage is a must. The single hole should be sufficient to allow excess water to pass through.
If you get significant rainwater where you live you might want to add another hole or two if the pots will be in a fully exposed location.
My Danville Planters are standing proud on each side of my garage adding to its luster and brick beauty.
Since my roof overhangs are pretty significant, they block excess water from getting in. So drainage is not an issue for me.
After all, plants do not like to get waterlogged...none of us appreciate getting "wet feet."
And if you don't get tons and tons of rain, the single hole will be sufficient.
Keep in mind that ECOFLEX® does not absorb water, so this is helpful when considering drainage and watering requirements.
Gotta love terra cotta pots but oh, how they absorb water, a bit of a pain at times.
Drainage hole tipster!
A quick note on color & style of the Danville Planters
No doubt they will look equally lovely adorning your house and decor adding to the charm and beauty of your landscape.
But the Danville Planters can be painted for a custom look. I'd never go that route because paint creates maintenance issues.
If left "as is"~ the Danville Planters are maintenance-free!
But if you you wanted to paint them a vibrant blue or sunny yellow know that would be an option.
The horizontal stripes resembling siding also give these boxes a custom look that makes them shine. More like one-of-a-kind composite pieces to be enjoyed for many years.
In fact, I think the "siding" looks a lot like shiplap or beadboard. So very trendy now!
To the eye, ECOFLEX® comes very close to composite. To the touch, it certainly feels like composite minus the excessive cost that composite would add.
Growing green with Garden Goods Direct!
It seems these days we order everything online from diapers to produce so why not plants, trees and shrubs, too? Simplify life in any way we can!
Look no further than Garden Goods Direct, an online garden center and plant nursery where you can buy high-quality, healthy plants and trees online. Better still? Free shipping on orders over $99!
Garden Goods Direct graciously supplied the Blue Point Juniper Two-Ball Topiary 3 gallon (4ft) used for photography purposes in this post. Many thanks to them!
I could rave on all day about how luscious these two beauties are but you can see from the photo's how healthy and vibrant these topiaries are!
The winter months are tough on us gardeners. We miss that soil trickling through our fingers.
So planting evergreens and indulging in a few holiday plants will get you through the long winter.
If I were to receive anything under that category this Christmas season, I would be doing jumping jacks with glee. Rosemary Ball Topiary? Yes please!!!
Their houseplant selection right now is FANTASTIC, too. This is where you can get that Chinese Money Plant I'm always raving about (Thanks Cheri!)
But their ZZ plant, Fiddle Leaf Fig Trees, Ficus Trees and Snake Plant selection are leaving drool all over my keyboard. (under houseplants.)
January/February are a great time to re-stock those houseplants!
And I'll be back in spring checking out their trees, shrubs and perennials as I replenish all the gaps in my garden and yard.
Last....but certainly not least, partnering with Garden Goods Direct was a dream. The owner himself answered all my topiary questions and I will confident these bushy beauties are going to survive and thrive.
Knowledgable, quick and free shipping, stellar caliber of plants and incredible selection. What more could this plant lady want? Garden Goods Direct is where it's at!
A quick note on price...
That double wall construction is serious! Just the right kind of bulk and heavy-duty heftiness you'd want in a planter.
Keep in mind that with the added soil, they are obviously a lot heavier so it's smart to choose a location wisely. You probably won't want to move them once filled.
But wherever you place the Danville Planter set by New Age Garden® that space is going to get some instant glamor and pizzazz.
Each Danville Planters retails at $70. For planters that you will get many years of usage out of, that's a fair price.
Walking around my neighborhood this time of year, you see lots of wood boxes tossed out on garbage day. They only lasted one season for the homeowner. Maybe two.
That's not going to cut it with me.
Wonderful ECOFLEX® will outlast the competition so that you get more bang for your buck!
Get yours before they are gone! Happy winter planting, folks!
P.S. I really enjoyed working with New Age Garden® and found them to be an efficient and gracious to team up with. I think you'll agree!
