Horti Hood 180 Review + {$140 Horti Hood 90 Giveaway!}

6/23/2015

Picture
Let me guess. You'd love to own your own greenhouse but don't want a permanent structure in your yard. Not to mention the expense! Meet the Horti Hood. The Horti Hood is a dome-shaped moveable greenhouse that can be used year after year to germinate your seeds and extend the growing season of your plants. And if you stagger your plantings, it's perfect for those second and third shifts. Even better? It costs a fraction of the price that a huge, cumbersome greenhouse would cost. It's simply marvelous. So we are ecstatic to have partnered with Rob McAlister from Cave Innovations who wants to give you a Horti Hood 90 valued at $140 US dollars. And guess what international readers? You can enter too!

Assembly

  • The Horti Hood comes with specific instructions with pictures making putting it together a breeze. It is very similar to putting together a dome tent. Although I suppose one person could assemble alone, Tom and I found that working together made it much easier. First, we put together the 9 fiberglass poles. Then you slowly feed the poles into the green sleeves. Whether working solo or with a friend, I would do this slowly. Move too quickly and I could see how you could rip the fabric. You then insert the poles in the brass eyelets as shown on the diagram provided. Difficult to explain but easy to do.
  • When assembling the poles, just be aware that they may come apart in the green sleeve during the assembly process. A bit frustrating, but you will still be able to put them together in the green sleeve if they come apart on you.

Uses:

  • My growing season just never seems long enough. I'd love to be able to grow more plants from seed over buying plants. In my Horti Hood I can start growing seeds in March right in my raised beds, no transplanting needed!
  • This year was a real bummer for many of my local gardening friends. We had some high 80 degree weather in mid-May! This unseasonable warmer weather prompted gardeners to plant early. Then we got a heavy frost. All their plants died. A Horti Hood would have saved those plants.
  • On those cold nights, especially in the Fall when your tomatoes are almost ripe, but not quite, the Horti Hood is perfect....it will help ripen the tomatoes and stave off the frost from killing your plants and ruining your crop. And yes, I used to cover my plants with all the linens and sheets from my house. Imagine the laundry I had to do!
  • I also plan on using my Horti Hood to help with my succession planting. I am planting lettuce and peas every few weeks hoping to get just enough to use. The Horti Hood will help germinate those seeds faster and protect them on the colder nights we still seem to be having.
  • Keeps out pests as well. Rabbits, deer and squirrel can't munch on my plants at night when covered by my Horti Hood. Organic pest control!
  • Your tropical plants are going to love the Horti Hood.
We actually talked over the phone with Horti Hood inventor Rob McAlister from Cave Innovations located in the UK. And it was great to get answers straight from the source. Horti Hoods (say that 10 times fast!!) come in either a free-standing form (180 degrees) or are wall-mounted (90 degrees). Both are great choices, depending on your landscape and your needs. The free-standing version (180) and the wall-mounted version (90) come in mini sizes as well. So there are four Horti Hoods to choose from in all.
Picture
Isn't the mini adorable? Kind of like a pet.
Owning a Horti Hood feels like having my very own slice of the Eden Project. And since you probably know by now that I'm obsessed with all things UK, in particular Devon & Cornwall, this is quite thrilling for me!

The Horti Hood looks like a highly functional centerpiece that attracts the attention of everyone in my neighborhood. And the Horti Hood is a new invention hot off the press. So you'll definitely want to be one of the first to own one!
Picture
See how long the fiberglass poles are?
Pros

  • It's so much cheaper than a regular greenhouse, can be moved and doesn't become that fixed, eyesore on your property like a regular greenhouse typically becomes.
  • Simple, sleek design. No zippers to fuss over. No broken greenhouse glass!
  • Ventilation panels allow for open air flow. So unlike a traditional greenhouse, you're not dealing with fans!
  • Made out of tough, UV stabilized, PVC material that does not quickly degrade in sunlight.
  • Weighing in at about 19 pounds, it's easy to move. Two people are ideal for balance, but one willing person can certainly manage just fine. {The Horti Hood 90 is 11 pounds}.
  • The Horti Hood 90 stores up against a wall when not in use.
  • The dome shape of the Horti Hood means that rainwater can run right off.
  • It's perfect to jumpstart your growing season and to extend it well into the Fall, protecting plants from frost. But it's also ideal for succession planting. So if you want to plant some lettuce or peas in the Spring and are hoping for second, even third crops in July & August, it's great to get those seedlings germinated quick. This is especially true when you have iffy and unpredictable weather like we do!
  • It collapses flat in a huge u-shape making storage easy in the winter.
  • The dome shape can accommodate taller plants in the middle and smaller plants and seedings on the outskirts.
  • There are very few parts to deal with, mostly just the poles, the tent pegs and the greenhouse dome. This obviously makes the assembly process quite easy.
  • The Horti Hood looks cool! You'll be the trendiest gardener in your whole neighborhood. My neighbors are already raving about it!!
Picture
The kids think the Horti Hood is all play and no work!
Cons

  • The pegs might work just fine for you or you might want to buy heavier duty ones that are a bit stronger and thicker to protect against heavy wind.
  • It says you can put the Horti Hood together in a few minutes, not a big deal, but it took us about an hour (maybe Tom's just a little slow).
  • It also says you can use the Horti Hood throughout the winter if there's no snow accumulation. There's no way I'm going to leave my Horti Hood out in winter. With the ridiculously high winds we get where I live; I'm afraid the product would blow away on me, even if I used heavy duty pegs.
A few questions to ask yourself before purchasing the Horti Hood...

  • What size requirements do I have? What type of space am I using this for?
  • Do I want a free-standing Horti Hood or am I looking to prop it up against a wall?
  • How many plants do I have? How many plants do I want? How many seeds am I looking to germinate in my Horti Hood?
~The Prize~

One Horti Hood 90 degree wall-mounted folding greenhouse valued at $140!!!

Oh, nice! I've thought about getting something like this but I hate to think about disassembling a greenhouse and trying to move it around. This looks so much easier to deal with, just lifting it up to water and moving it where it needs to go.

Would love to own a Hoodi for my garden. Our growing season is short in Montana due to nighttime temps being to cold for young plants. With this I could put the plants in - and cover with the Hoodi and the daytime heat would keep the plants from dying overnight. It would be perfect to also shield the plants from plant eating predators!
